He let her hand go as she started walking down the stairs, watching, waiting. Nothing was ever as easy as it seemed. Not here. And he'd do whatever he had to to make sure she got out. They'd come too far already. Her head started to turn. Don't. Chihiro don't. She hadn't been granted her leave; she'd won it. Yubaba would not be so generous did she get a second chance to keep her. And with the curse lifted, there wasn't much he could do."We'll meet again. I promise."
She disappeared into the tunnel. And made it out on the other end. He didn't know why, but he was certain of it. Certain as he'd keep his promise.They'd been brought together twice now and that was more than a coincidence. They'd remembered each other. They'd saved each other. It it wasn't meant to be, he'd find a way to make it happen. They'd find a way."Don't worry. I'll go have a talk with Yubaba."
He could see it in their eyes as he walked back, this wasn't going to end well. Even were he not about to quit, he'd said it himself, Yubaba was not a woman known for her generosity. She was not likely to let him go without punishment... He didn't care. It was worth it."I'm fine, I got my name back."
He was Nigihayami Kohaku Nushi. He was the spirit of the Kohaku River. He was Chihiro's friend. And that was his mantra, as he entered the bath house. He knew who he was, where he came from, and there was nothing she could do to him.---
He woke up outside a tunnel... Standing, but he didn't remember how he'd got there. Or why he was there.. or where he was going. Something about it all was familiar, but he couldn't place what it was. He only had two choices where to go; the tunnel or a path through the woods. He took a step towards the tunnel before turning around. And then the walked away.
And that was the beginning.
